Inspiring curiosity, confidence, and capability for the future

Korowa is proud to announce the launch of the Korowa Girls’ STEM Academy, an exciting new, whole-school initiative for students in both the Junior and Senior School, designed to nurture girls’ curiosity, confidence, and capability in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

The Academy reflects Korowa’s longstanding commitment to academic excellence and girls’ education, while responding to a rapidly changing world in which STEM skills are increasingly essential across all careers and industries. Through the Academy, students will be supported to explore STEM deeply, creatively, and with purpose - regardless of whether they see themselves as future engineers, doctors, designers, entrepreneurs, or problem solvers yet to discover their path.

Why a STEM Academy?

Research and experience consistently show that girls thrive in environments where they feel confident to ask questions, take intellectual risks, and see themselves reflected in the learning. The Korowa Girls’ STEM Academy has been developed to provide exactly this: a supportive, challenging, and inspiring framework that encourages girls to engage meaningfully with STEM from across the Junior and Senior School, from early learning through to VCE.

The Academy recognises that STEM is not just about technical knowledge. It is about critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, ethical decision-making, and resilience - skills that empower students well beyond the classroom.

What the Academy Offers

The Korowa Girls’ STEM Academy will offer students access to a structured and enriched range of STEM co-curricular opportunities through the year, which will include:

  • Hands-on, project based experiences that connect theory with real-world application
  • Exposure to STEM careers and role models, including women working and leading in STEM fields
  • Interdisciplinary learning, where science, mathematics, technology, and engineering intersect with creativity and design
  • Introductions to world-class facilities through partnerships with some of Melbourne’s leading universities
  • Opportunities for collaboration, competitions, and challenges that build confidence and teamwork
  • Interstate and global learning experiences, with a multi-year program of focussed visits to leading STEM organisations and locations in Australia and overseas

The Academy is designed to complement existing curriculum offerings while providing additional depth, challenge, and inspiration for students with an interest in STEM.

A Focus on Curiosity, Confidence and Challenge

The structure of the Korowa Girls’ STEM Academy offers a layered approach through Open Access Activities and a targeted STEM Enrichment Program, designed to support broad participation across the school while also providing a purposeful extension pathway for students with strong interest and aptitude in STEM.

  • Open Access Activities invite all students to engage with STEM in inclusive, low barrier ways that spark curiosity, build confidence, and encourage students to explore new ideas without pressure.
  • Alongside this, the STEM Enrichment Program offers targeted opportunities for students, providing greater challenge, depth, and complexity, enabling them to extend their skills through enriched learning experiences.

Together with our existing signature STEM activities (STEM Racing and our ROV Program), these complementary pathways ensure that every student has the opportunity to engage meaningfully with STEM - whether they are discovering an emerging interest or ready to be challenged and stretched - while also developing confidence, curiosity, and a love of learning.

Looking Ahead

The launch of the Korowa Girls’ STEM Academy marks an exciting new chapter for our school community. We look forward to sharing more details with families as the Academy continues to grow, including information about student participation, enrichment opportunities, and key events throughout the year.

We are proud to be investing in an initiative that champions girls in STEM and, more importantly, champions girls in believing in themselves.
