Speech, Drama & Effective Communication

Korowa's Speech, Drama & Effective Communication program develops students’ individual communication skills, helping students speak with confidence, express their ideas clearly and perform with presence in a range of settings.

Through small-group and individual tuition, students build strong foundations in oracy, performance techniques and presentation skills that support learning, leadership and self-expression across school life and beyond.

Communication matters

A powerful life skill

The ability to communicate clearly and confidently is a powerful life skill. At Korowa, Speech, Drama & Effective Communication supports students to:

  • Speak with clarity and confidence
  • Listen, interpret and respond thoughtfully
  • Present ideas effectively to different audiences
  • Develop expressive reading and performance skills
  • Build self-belief in formal and informal speaking situations

These skills underpin success across many areas of learning, from classroom participation and leadership to debating, performing arts and future study or careers.

The program

How it works

Speech, Drama & Effective Communication is offered as a co-curricular program, delivered through small-group or individual lessons with specialist tutors. Participation is optional and designed to complement Korowa’s curriculum and co-curricular programs.

A key strength of the Speech, Drama & Effective Communication program is its individualised approach. Through small-group and one-to-one tuition, students receive personalised guidance that supports confidence, skill development and steady progress.

Private tuition options allow students to work at their own pace, whether they are building foundational confidence or refining advanced presentation and performance skills.

Students may choose to undertake ASCA examinations, which offer structured assessment, feedback and recognition of progress. Participation in examinations is encouraged but not compulsory, allowing families to choose the pathway that best suits their daughter.

Years 1-6

Younger students develop foundational communication skills through expressive reading, speech, drama and performance activities. The focus is on confidence, articulation, listening and enjoyment, helping students feel comfortable speaking in front of others.

Students are encouraged to enter Australian Speech Communication Association (ASCA) examinations, which provide structured goals and positive feedback.

Years 7-8

In the middle years, students refine presentation and performance techniques while developing clarity, expression and confidence in more formal speaking contexts. Lessons support effective communication across learning areas and emerging leadership opportunities.

Students may continue ASCA examinations, supported through theory instruction, preparation and supervision.

Years 9-12

Senior students focus on advanced communication and presentation skills, including structured speaking, performance techniques and expressive delivery. The program supports students preparing for leadership roles, presentations, interviews and public speaking contexts, alongside optional ASCA assessments.
