Whether she’s a first-time player or a seasoned competitor, every student at Korowa is encouraged to discover the joy of movement, the value of teamwork, and the confidence that comes from achieving her personal best.

Sport and physical activity are integral to wellbeing at Korowa. Through participation in sport, girls learn leadership, resilience, commitment and camaraderie, skills that stay with them for life.

Korowa believes in active participation for all. Every student is supported to find a sport she enjoys, from social house events to elite competitive pathways. The emphasis is on belonging, health and the pursuit of excellence, all within a culture of teamwork and respect.

Our programs aim to build confidence and lifelong healthy habits, encouraging students to value fitness, fair play and perseverance.

Elite pathways

For students who wish to pursue sport at a higher level, Korowa offers structured pathways that support both performance and wellbeing. Talented athletes are encouraged to develop their skills through advanced coaching, competitive opportunities and access to high-quality training facilities, including the School’s gym and specialist fitness spaces.

Just as importantly, Korowa takes a holistic approach to elite sport. Students are supported to manage training commitments alongside their academic responsibilities, with guidance around health, recovery and balance. Coaches and sporting leaders work closely with students to provide individual support, helping each athlete progress with confidence while remaining engaged, healthy and connected to school life.

How sport works at Korowa

Korowa’s sports program is structured to support students at every stage of their schooling. Explore how sport develops in the Junior and Senior School, and view the range of sports offered throughout the year.

Junior School (Prep-6)

From the earliest years, Korowa students develop confidence and coordination through fun, inclusive activities. Junior students take part in House competitions, intra-school games and interschool carnivals throughout the year.

Korowa is a member of both School Sport Victoria (SSV) and Girls Sport Victoria (GSV), giving students opportunities to participate in swimming, athletics, cross country, netball, basketball, AFL and soccer.

The focus is on participation and enjoyment, helping every child build resilience, teamwork and a lifelong love of being active. 

Senior School (Y 7-12)

Korowa is a proud member of Girls Sport Victoria (GSV), providing students with opportunities to represent their school in weekly inter-school competitions, major carnivals and championship events against 23 other schools in Melbourne.

In addition to weekly fixtures, GSV hosts major carnivals in Swimming and Diving, Cross Country and Track and Field, plus special events such as Triathlon and Golf.

Students are encouraged to try new sports, compete with pride and enjoy the friendships formed through team participation.

For students who want to take their sport further, Korowa’s extra-curricular sporting clubs and programs offer expert coaching, strong competition and a true sense of community.

Snowsports

Snowsports

The Korowa Snowsports Club is open to students from Prep to Year 12, offering opportunities in alpine skiing and snowboarding. Weekly dryland training during the middle terms supports strength, technique and skill development.

Students prepare for the Victorian Interschool Championships, with the Korowa Race Weekend at Mt Buller providing on-mountain training, time trials and age-group racing. While students should be confident navigating blue runs, families new to snowsports are welcome to participate socially and develop skills at their own pace.

Rowing

Rowing

Led by Director of Rowing Jane Robinson, a national champion, three-time World Champion and triple Olympian, Korowa Rowing offers students in Years 7–12 a challenging, team-based sporting pathway.

Learn to Row begins in Term 4 for Year 7 students and is also open to new participants in older year levels. From there, students may progress to the Squad Rowing Program, training across Terms 1 and 4 and competing at Victorian regattas, including the Head of the Schoolgirls’ Regatta. The program builds technical skill, strength and discipline while fostering teamwork, confidence and lasting friendships.

For students looking for additional training opportunities, there is also a winter sculling competition held in Term 3.

Netball

Netball

Australia netball legend Shelley O’Donnell, three-time World Champion, Commonwealth Games gold medallist and former national captain, leads Korowa Netball, welcoming students in Years 4–12 and providing an inclusive, positive environment for players of all abilities.

Teams train once per week with experienced coaches including past national players and compete in the Autumn and Spring Waverley District Netball Association competitions against other schools and clubs. Holiday clinics give students additional opportunities to develop skills, build confidence and connect with peers across year levels.

With 27 teams across the school, Korowa Netball is the largest netball club in the Waverley District Netball Association.

Basketball

Basketball

Korowa Basketball is open to students in Years 1–10 and provides a supportive pathway for players of all experience levels. Teams compete in the Waverley Basketball Association on Saturdays and train weekly in the Roslyn Otzen Sports & Wellbeing Centre.

The program emphasises skill development, teamwork and enjoyment, while fostering strong friendships. For Prep students, Learn to Ball is offered during lunchtime, introducing core skills and building confidence in preparation for their first season in Year 1.

Golf

Golf program

Korowa offers a unique after-school golf program for girls, delivered in partnership with the Australian Women’s Golf Network (AWGN) and hosted at the prestigious Commonwealth Golf Club.

Open to students in Years 5 to 12, the program supports beginners and experienced players alike through small-group coaching with certified professionals. Alongside skill development, students explore confidence, communication and professional etiquette, highlighting how golf can support connection and leadership beyond the course.

With transport provided from Korowa, access to equipment, and opportunities to learn in a supportive, all-girls environment, the program reflects Korowa’s commitment to offering experiences that combine skill, wellbeing and real-world learning.

Frequently asked questions

What sports and competitions are available for students?

Students have access to a wide and well-structured sport program from Prep through Year 12. In the Senior School (Years 7–12), girls participate in Girls Sport Victoria (GSV) weekly competitions across the year, choosing from sports such as tennis, softball, netball, hockey, AFL, volleyball, badminton, soccer, basketball and cricket, alongside major carnivals in swimming, cross country and athletics.

Junior students engage in house, interschool and district sport opportunities through School Sport Victoria (SSV) and GSV gala days, with activities designed around participation, skill development and enjoyment. There are also Korowa-run sporting clubs in basketball, netball, rowing and snowsports that support training and competition beyond scheduled school sport.

Do students of all ability levels get to participate in sport?

Yes. Sport at Korowa is inclusive and encourages every student to be active, try new things and grow in confidence, whether they’re new to a sport or already experienced. Students are supported to discover activities they enjoy, with opportunities to play for fun, develop skills and, where they choose, compete in interschool competitions. Clubs and teams are structured so that girls of varying experience and ability can find a place that suits them.

How does sport support wellbeing and personal development?

Sport is an integral part of wellbeing and personal growth at Korowa. Participation in physical activity helps students build resilience, leadership, teamwork, commitment and confidence, all qualities that contribute to both individual wellbeing and a strong sense of community.

The School’s state-of-the-art Roslyn Otzen Sports and Wellbeing Centre further supports a holistic approach to health and fitness with excellent facilities for movement, strength and sport development

What facilities and support are there for sport?

Korowa boasts excellent sport facilities that enrich the student experience. The purpose-built Sports and Wellbeing Centre includes an eight-lane swimming pool, indoor courts, rooftop courts, gym and specialist studio spaces for dance, pilates and more. There are also outdoor grassed ovals and tennis courts, and dedicated rowing space at the River Campus.

These facilities support sport training, interschool competition and informal physical activity, helping students to grow their skills and enjoy movement in a supportive environment.
