Book Week 2025 | Book an Adventure

share

Every year, Korowa comes alive with the joy of Book Week. Book Week 2025 was no exception. With the theme Book an Adventure, it was a week-long celebration of literature, imagination, and storytelling in all their power. While students at Korowa learn to read for their studies throughout their school journey, Book Week offers something more. It’s about reading for pleasure, rediscovering the wonder of stories, and celebrating our reading culture alongside schools across Australia. None of this would be possible without the vision and dedication of our Library Team, who carefully planned and curated each experience for students across the School.

Senior School: Puzzles, Trivia, and a Reading Adventure

In the Senior School, the Library Team created an exciting program that pushed students to think differently about reading. Lunchtimes in the library were buzzing with scavenger hunts, puzzle challenges, and the ever-popular Book Week Trivia, which drew staff members into the competition too.

This year’s scavenger hunt became a real adventure, with students tasked to uncover suitcases hidden inside three beloved novels. Clues and riddles guided their way, with rewards for the quickest detectives. Together with the Korowa Reading Challenge, it made Term 3 a powerful reminder of how books connect us, inspire us, and spark curiosity.

Junior School: Inspiration from Leading Authors

Junior School students had the unique opportunity to meet some of Victoria’s most beloved children’s authors. These visits, secured almost a year in advance, are the result of the Library Team’s incredible planning and deep knowledge of what will excite and inspire our students. Their work ensured each session gave students an unforgettable glimpse into the creative world of writing and illustration, delivered through workshops designed to spark imagination and build confidence.

The Library Team carefully selects authors who are already favourites among our students or who represent popular genres for particular year levels. Younger students are often treated to picture book authors and illustrators, giving them the thrill of hands-on illustration workshops. For older students, visits are tailored to nurture imagination, fuel creativity, and grow a lasting passion for writing. Each session bridged the gap between books and their creators, showing students that stories are alive, made by people not so different from them, and inviting them to imagine becoming authors themselves.

Storytellers at Korowa's Book Week 2025

  • Kim Kane captivated our Prep and Year 1 students with stories that stretched their imaginations and encouraged them to think about the endless possibilities of storytelling.
  • Gabrielle Wang, acclaimed author and illustrator, met with Year 5 students, sharing her belief that “reading stories about diverse characters by diverse authors helps you understand different people and cultures.”
  • Alex Miles joined Year 4 for a lively writing workshop which encouraged students to collaborate and write.
  • Amelia Mellor inspired Year 6 students with her love of history and fantasy.
  • Sher Rill Ng delighted Year 2 and 3 students with a mix of storytelling and illustration, sparking fresh creativity.
  • The ELC enjoyed shared stories from the Wurundjeri Woi-Wurrung Aboriginal Corporation that deepened understanding of culture and Country.

A Whole-School Celebration: Buddy Reading

One of the highlights of Book Week 2025 was our first whole-school Buddy Reading Celebration. On the Thursday, students paired up across year levels to share in the joy of reading together. These moments proved that stories are best when shared. Even members of our Executive Team joined in, reading with Junior School students. These moments highlighted the power of storytelling to build connection across ages, experiences, and perspectives.

Dress Up Day

That same day, the campus erupted with colour and creativity for our annual Book Week Dress Up Day. The theme, favourite protagonist, saw students and staff arrive as everything from classic heroes to modern adventurers.

In the Junior School assembly, families cheered as an exuberant parade of characters filled Beatrice Guyett Hall, from countless Harry Potter favourites to imaginative group costumes. The energy was infectious, with every corner of the campus alive with laughter, creativity, and character.

Why Book Week Matters

Book Week at Korowa is far more than a calendar event, it is a celebration of our values. It reminds us that reading builds empathy, creativity, and community. Thanks to our Library Team, Book Week 2025 united the entire School in a shared love of literature. This year’s theme, Book an Adventure, encouraged students to see stories not only as something to read but as journeys to take.
