How Korowa prepares students for international university pathways

share

For students considering studying overseas, understanding the UK university application process is an important first step. From UCAS applications and personal statements to choosing the right course and university, the pathway differs from Australia's admissions system. To ensure Korowa students and families receive the most current advice, Head of Student Futures and Pathways Cath Freney recently attended the UCAS International Conference and the World Class Study in London Teachers and Counsellors Conference.

Combined with visits to leading institutions including Imperial College London, University College London (UCL), the London School of Economics (LSE), King's College London, the University of the Arts London, the University of Cambridge, the University of Oxford, and the University of Edinburgh, the experience provided firsthand insight into international university admissions. The knowledge and connections gained will strengthen Korowa's ability to support students and families as they explore global university pathways.

Understanding the UK university application process

One of Cath's biggest takeaways was that students should begin by identifying the right course, rather than focusing solely on university rankings.

"Finding the right course structure, curriculum, and assessment style is often more important than choosing a university based on its reputation alone," Cath explains.

Across both conferences, university representatives consistently reinforced that successful applications are built on genuine academic interest and thoughtful course selection. Rather than striving for perfection, universities are looking for students who demonstrate intellectual curiosity, sustained engagement with their chosen field, and the independence to thrive in higher education.

What UK universities look for in international applicants

The conferences also highlighted how admissions expectations continue to evolve.

For students applying through UCAS, the application process is changing, including a new structured personal statement designed to help applicants better demonstrate their motivation, preparation, and suitability for their chosen course.

Beyond academic results, universities value evidence that students have actively explored their interests through wider reading, competitions, volunteering, work experience, research, or independent projects.

"The strongest message from the conference was that universities are seeking evidence of potential rather than perfection," says Cath.

When should students start preparing for UK university applications?

Unlike the Australian system, where university applications are largely based on an ATAR received at the end of Year 12, UK applications begin during Year 12 using predicted results and require students to apply directly to specific courses.

That means preparation starts much earlier.

Cath recommends students begin exploring potential pathways in Years 10 and 11 by selecting appropriate VCE subjects, researching courses, and developing meaningful experiences connected to their interests.

"A competitive application isn't built in the final months of Year 12. It's developed over several years through informed subject choices, sustained curiosity, and genuine engagement."

Why visiting UK universities provides insights beyond a prospectus

While university websites provide important information, visiting campuses and speaking directly with admissions staff, academics, and current students offered a much richer understanding of each institution.

Cath observed significant differences in teaching styles, course design, campus culture, student support, and admissions priorities across the universities she visited.

"Choosing a university is about far more than rankings. It's about finding an environment where a student will thrive academically and personally."

These firsthand experiences will help Korowa students make more informed decisions by understanding not only what a university offers, but what studying there is actually like.

International university pathways: How Korowa supports students

A valuable outcome of the conferences was the opportunity to establish relationships with university representatives and careers practitioners from around the world.

These connections provide access to current information about admissions requirements, scholarships, course changes, and emerging trends, while also creating opportunities to share best practice with careers professionals supporting students through increasingly diverse university pathways.

For Korowa students and families, this means advice that is informed by direct conversations with universities, rather than relying solely on published information.

Studying overseas: What parents need to know

For many families, studying overseas can feel complex or out of reach. Cath returned from London with a reassuring message.

International universities offer extensive support for overseas students, from accommodation and visas to wellbeing and academic transition. Australian students are also highly regarded and well prepared for the expectations of UK higher education.

"International study isn't simply about attending a prestigious university overseas," Cath says. "It's about finding the right academic and personal fit, and helping students make informed decisions with confidence."

At Korowa, preparing students for life beyond school means opening doors to opportunities both in Australia and around the world. Through expert careers guidance, direct connections with leading universities, and personalised support, students are empowered to explore pathways that align with their aspirations. This approach has already helped three students from the Class of 2025 receive offers from the University of Cambridge and continues to support every student in pursuing the pathway that's right for them.
