One Student’s Idea Inspires a Senior School Act of Kindness

What began as an idea from our Co-School Captain, Emily, became an inspiring act of community care. With initiative and compassion, Emily contacted Zonta Club of Melbourne on Yarra Inc. to propose a collaborative Sewing Bee. Together, they planned a heartfelt effort project to create Zonta Breast Care Cushions for patients recovering from breast surgery.

What Is a Zonta Breast Care Cushion — And Why It Matters

The Zonta Breast Care Cushion is a small, soft pillow that makes a big difference. Designed to support recovery and offer comfort, These cushions help ease pressure and pain following breast surgery and are used in hospitals across Australia. Importantly, Breast Care Nurses distribute them to patients, making daily tasks like sleeping or driving more manageable.

Hands-On Compassion: A Day of Purposeful Sewing at Korowa

On Sewing Bee day, Senior School students jumped into action with enthusiasm, creativity and focus. They joined each stage of the process — from cutting fabric to sewing and gently stuffing each cushion. Moreover, the atmosphere was special: sewing machines hummed, conversations flowed, and laughter filled the room. Meanwhile, students wrote heartfelt cards to accompany the Zonta Breast Care Cushions, reminding recipients they are not alone.

Living Our Values: Courage, Respect, Integrity and Service in Action

At Korowa, our values of courage, respect, integrity and service shape all that we do. This project brought those values to life in a truly memorable way. Because of Emily’s leadership, many students found a meaningful way to give back and support others. Their kindness, especially through making the Zonta Breast Care Cushions, showed genuine care for people they may never meet.

“This was such a meaningful experience,” Emily shared. “I knew Zonta did incredible work and wanted to find a way for our students to get involved. Seeing everyone come together with such care and focus made me proud to be part of this community.”

Ultimately, this initiative reminded us what makes Korowa so special — a place where ideas spark meaningful action.
