Sport
Being involved in physical activity is a fundamental aspect of the Korowa experience for each student. It adds to a sense of belonging and pride for the school whilst enriching the individuals’ physical, social and emotional literacy. Supported by an extensive House Sport offering for all students at Korowa, the opportunities for students to use world class facilities, exceptional equipment and be coached by some of the very best ensure that all students, irrelevant of skill level will take something out of their sporting experiences.
Senior SchoolCo-Curricular Sport
Korowa is a member of Girls Sport Victoria (GSV) which provides our Year 7-12 students with opportunities to compete in inter-school weekly sport competitions, carnivals championships and special events against 23 other schools in the Melbourne region. GSV encourages all students to participate in school sport, whether it be trying a new sport in a non-competitive environment or representing their school in GSV interschool sport and carnivals.
Korowa students are encouraged to participate in one sport per semester and can compete in the following weekly sports across the year; Tennis and Softball (Term 1), Netball, Hockey and AFL (Term 2), Volleyball, Badminton and Soccer (Term 3) and Basketball and Cricket (Term 4). During the year GSV also hold Major Carnival Championships such as Swimming and Diving (Term 1), Cross Country (Term 2) and Track and Field (Term 3). Special events such as Triathlon and Golf (Term 1) are also available to students.
Junior SchoolCo-Curricular Sport
Students from Prep – Year 6 are provided the opportunity to engage with a range of house, interschool and intra school sporting opportunities throughout their time within the Junior School. With the hope that students foster a lifelong interest and appreciation for physical activity, our programs focus on participation, while building resilience and confidence and finding enjoyment through active play.
Korowa is a member of both School Sport Victoria (SSV) and Girls Sport Victoria (GSV), which provide students with multiple opportunities to engage with interschool sport throughout the year. SSV is open to all Victorian primary schools, with Korowa joining a range of comparative schools in the area as part of the Armadale District. During the year SSV hold carnivals for Cross Country, Swimming, Diving, Athletics, Netball, Basketball, AFL, and Soccer, which we encourage any student who is interested to trial for and engage with. Through GSV, year 5-6 students participate in Cross Country, Athletics, Swimming/Diving and Sport Gala Days, that focus on participation and providing opportunities to engage with sports run in the Senior School.
Korowa Sporting Clubs
Korowa Basketball
Korowa Basketball Club is for students in Years 1 – 10 who are eager to develop and excel their basketball skills. Playing in the Waverley Basketball Association on a Saturday, members of the basketball program train weekly in the school’s Roslyn Otzen Sports & Wellbeing Centre and are coached by a group qualified basketball coaches. Inclusive of students of all abilities, Korowa Basketball is an opportunity for students to develop friendships all whilst participating in physical activity. For students in Prep, Learn to Ball is a tailor made opportunity that occurs during lunchtime to build the introductory fundamentals of the game in preparation for their first season in Year 1.
Korowa Netball
Students from Years 4–12 can join the Korowa Netball Club. The club offers all students of any ability the opportunity to participate in a safe, inclusive, and enjoyable environment. All teams train once per week and are supported by experienced coaches who work to meet each participant’s goals. Teams are involved in the Autumn and Spring WDNA Netball competitions, playing against many local schools and associated clubs.
The club also offers regular holiday clinics where interested students can extend their skill acquisition and develop further friendships across year levels.
Korowa Rowing
Students can join the Korowa Rowing Club in Years 8 -12. Learn to Row takes place in Term 3 for Year 8 students and is designed to introduce the sport and a variety of skills to all interested students. The program will also accept new students in older year levels.
After participating in Learn to Row, students can join the Squad Rowing Program and train regularly throughout Term 1 & 4. All Korowa crews compete in Victorian regattas including the Head of the School Girls Regatta held annually in March. Rowing involves developing high levels of technical and physical skills and relies on outstanding teamwork for crews to succeed. Rowers learn to be organised as the training sessions are often before school. The team nature of the sport makes our rowers accountable, and the friendships formed in rowing are often strong.
Korowa Snowsports
The Korowa Snowsports Club provides students from Prep – Year 12 the opportunity to participate in alpine sports with weekly dryland in the middle terms to support skill development. Building toward the Victorian Interschool Championships, the Korowa Race weekend at Mt Buller gives students an on-mountain experience and promotes development in downhill skiing and snowboarding. There is a practice time trial, race coaching sessions and an age group race on the Sunday afternoon. Whilst this opportunity requires students to be able to safely stop and navigate blue runs, new families to the snow are encouraged to time their weekend at the snow and engage socially whilst building the fundamental skills privately.
