Yesterday, Korowa held it’s annual Founders’ Day. Our community gathered to mark a remarkable milestone — 135 years since our founding. It was a moment to reflect on the legacy of two extraordinary women, Mrs Henrietta Akehurst and her daughter, Ethel, whose vision and determination laid the foundation for the school we know today.

Henrietta Akehurst’s dream was simple but bold: to provide her daughter with a richer, more empowering education. From that mother’s hope, Korowa Anglican Girls’ School was born — a school that has gone on to inspire generations of young women to learn, lead and thrive.

To honour this legacy, we held a special Founders’ Day service at St Paul’s Cathedral in Melbourne. The grandeur of the cathedral provided a fitting backdrop for such a significant occasion. Our School Captains and staff led a formal processional, followed by stirring performances from our students and choirs. Their voices filled the space with a sense of pride, reverence and gratitude.

Korowa’s Founders’ Day Service not only reflected on our past but also celebrated the values that continue to guide us today: courage, conviction, care and community. It reminded us that while our school has grown and evolved, our purpose remains the same — to provide a place where every student is known, supported and challenged to be her best.

Principal Mrs Booth reflected on the ceremonial day:
“It was a very special day…days like yesterday take an entire community to pull off and I know that everyone here had a role in making it such a lovely event. We had a number of Korovians, current parents and event a past principal or two – and they all said how wonderful it was”.

Founders’ Day is more than a celebration of history. It’s a tribute to those who dared to dream and a call to carry their legacy forward.
