Social Service

Social Service

At Korowa, we believe it is important that all students gain a deep understanding of the world and their place within it.  Part of this understanding involves the awareness of the importance of community service.

All girls in the school participate in the Social Service Program. There are three main elements in the program:

  1. The weekly giving program encourages students to make a small contribution each week, and at the end of each semester this money is sent to the class's chosen charity;
  2. Individual class  special efforts (e.g., sweets stalls, car washes) to raise money for a charity in which they have a particular interest;
  3. School special efforts such as the Big Day In where the whole School participates to raise money for a school in Bangladesh.

Each student group elects a Social Service Representative who is responsible for their weekly collection, for organising the class's special efforts, and for co-ordinating the participation of the class in the whole school's selected endeavours. The Social Service Representatives of Years 7 - 12, together with the School Social Service Captain and the teacher representative form the Social Service Committee. Community involvement is encouraged at all levels.

Students in Years 9 - 12 may also decide to participate in community service via involvement in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme.

Korowa Bangladesh

Korowa is proud to support a school in Bhola Island, Bangladesh, each year raising the funds necessary to provide over 300 students with a high standard of education. Through many fundraising activities, Korowa girls are dedicated to supplying books, resources, furniture and teachers' salaries for students who would otherwise have no opportunity for an education.

The Bangladesh school was built in 1996 and is run by Mr Fred Hyde, who has dedicated his life to building schools and providing education for children in remote areas. The school is named the Korowa Memorial School to honour the memory of our late Chaplain, Reverend Beth Richards, and was officially opened on 1 March 1997. Fred Hyde visits us regularly to share news of Korowa Bangladesh and meet the girls involved in fundraising to sustain the school.
