Rowing at Korowa

Rowing at Korowa

Welcome to rowing at Korowa

In what I think is a first for a Korovian sport, this year's edition of the Korowa Rowing Handbook is to be published online, as a part of the Korowa school website.  In fact, you may be reading this welcome online!  This will save us quite a large sum of money; the information will be readily available, and updateable.  The site will enable us to post regatta and camp information, have permission forms downloadable and share more pictures and videos.  So make sure that you bookmark the site.

This year the Friends of Rowing are lead by Robyn Reynolds.  The FOR is a fantastic group of parents who support the rowing program and help give direction to the program.  Historically, rowing was started at Korowa by a group of parents who wanted their daughters to try this wonderful sport.  Although these parents have now moved on, the spirit of involvement with the program remains.  The program still relies on the support of parents and friends to run smoothly and affordably.  There are four major ways that parents can help the rowing program;

  1. Join the Friends of Rowing Committee and have your input into the running of the club
  2. Become a Boat Race Official.  Each school needs to provide a BRO at each regatta entered.  It is a way to learn about the sport and become more involved in rowing.
  3. Camp Helpers.  We always need helpers at camp to prepare meals etc.
  4. Form a crew of friends, colleagues and family to race in the Mums and Dads (MAD) regatta held in June/July each year.

Thanks to the fund raising efforts of the FOR the boat fleet at Korowa is now becoming younger and more modern.  In the past 12 months the club has bought two new boats with a value well in excess of $35,000.  Keeping the fleet and rowing equipment up to date and replacing worn equipment is now our focus rather than increasing the size of the fleet.

This season will be our second season as a complete sculling school.  Our results last season where fantastic and we look forward to repeating that success.  The program has a number of camps and regattas that each provides a piece of the ‘season jigsaw'.  From our ‘experience rowing program' to the training camps in January and the Head of the Schoolgirls Regatta, the program is growing and exciting, offering the girls many opportunities to excel and improve their performances.

Our coaches do a wonderful job looking after the safety of your daughters and encouraging them in their rowing endeavours.  Many of them are old Korovian themselves and delight in challenging the next generation of Korowa Rowers.  This season we welcome a new Junior Rowing Coordinator, Claire Baker.  Claire rowed in the first Korowa crews in her school days, and then went on to a short stint rowing for Melbourne University.  Good Luck Claire!
