Pastoral Care

Pastoral Care

As a Health Promoting School, Korowa takes its responsibility to care for the whole person very seriously. We realize that each girl requires individual care and attention and each student's  health and well being is monitored and attended to each day.

In the Junior School and Year 6, the classroom teacher has the principal pastoral care role, together with the Head of the Junior School or Middle School. Teachers are supported by numerous other staff, such as the Head of Individual Enrichment, Health Carer, the School Counsellor and the School Chaplain.  Staff undertake professional development on a regular basis to ensure their knowledge and expertise remains current.

From Year 7, the Class Tutor, who meets with the class during roll call each day and teaches all members of the class in at least one subject, takes on the principal pastoral care role.  The Head of Middle School supports the Class Tutors of Years 7 and 8 and develops a close relationship with each student during their time in the Middle School.

House Tutors of girls in Years 9 - 12 are operate as part of a team with the House Co-ordinators and the Head of the Senior School. Again, various specialist support staff provide additional input to the pastoral care program, as required, and community professionals and agencies are consulted when there would be an advantage to the student.

The Personal Development Program becomes more overt from Year 7, with girls participating in a structured program which includes Health Education and Outdoor Education.  It continues in later years with students participating in residential retreats, wellbeing sessions and opportunities to engage in activities with boys' schools.  The approach is one which encourages reflection and deeper thought, and promotes student engagement as they move into their most senior years of schooling.

Religious Education at each year level encourages spiritual growth and self understanding.  As Korowa is an Anglican school, the primary religious study is of Christianity, but all major religious traditions are studied over the years, recognizing their contribution to our multicultural society.  Students are not required to agree with a particular point of view of the course, but are required to know about and discuss issues of religious or ethical significance.  Students are encouraged to respect all religious beliefs and practices.

A sequential Careers Education Program (which includes VCE subject selection and planning for post-school studies) is an important part of the Year 9 - VCE curriculum.
