Korowa students scoop top prizes in Chinese Essay Competition

Four Korowa Anglican Girls’ School students received the top three prizes in the 12th annual Chinese Youth Essay Competition - a global competition attracting 126,000 essay submissions worldwide from more than 120 schools.

Congratulations to Cynthia Shen (Year 11) who was awarded first prize, Elaine Wen (Year 12) and Caroline Li (Year 8) who received second prize, and Myra Li (Year 10) who received third prize.

The global competition was organised by the Ministry of Education in China, the Educational Division of Ministry for Overseas Chinese Affairs, the Chinese International Educational Cultural Exchange Foundation and six other organisations.

Essays were assessed on the basis of writing skills, language proficiency and imagination and involved writing a piece about a fun thing that had happened in real life or a creative piece based on a journey to outer space.

The competition was established by the well-known educator, the late Mr Han Zuoli in 1993, and, although it has been conducted continuously for the past 19 years, this was the first year in which Korowa students entered.

Korowa’s Chinese teacher, Ms Shaorong Baggio was also awarded the Teacher Prize for mentoring students in the competition.
