Korowa Anglican Girls' School

Senior School

The senior years are a time of great opportunity and achievement at Korowa. The Senior School aims to prepare students for success in the VCE and beyond. Cultural exchanges, leadership positions and teamwork opportunities are abundant and senior students are encouraged to participate in a wide range of co-curricular activities. We believe that when the internationally recognised VCE is combined with our unique personal development program, students are well-equipped for life beyond the classroom.

Our Senior School curriculum has everything you would expect in a quality secondary school — languages, sciences, mathematics, performing and visual arts, business studies, history, geography, physical education, food technology — including, of course, a full range of VCE subjects. But Korowa takes it a step further.

Our Year 11 and 12 program of study is the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE). Most VCE subjects are available to students. We also offer first year university studies as well as access to Vocational Education and Training (VET) to meet student needs.

Korowa's Year 9 and 10 curriculum provides a strong foundation and thorough preparation for the VCE through a challenging, enjoyable and stimulating program. Year 9 students also get to step outside the classroom for the last 5 weeks of the School year and participate in one of two Korowa only programs: Korowa Trek or Urban Connect.

All senior students participate in a personal development subject. Here elements of our Student Welfare program are addressed in an age appropriate manner.

Our sequential careers education program commences in Year 9 with a focus on establishing and, where necessary, broadening interests and options. Year 10 students undertake work experience and Year 11 and 12 students have detailed, personal careers counseling sessions throughout the year.

Korowa achieves remarkable and consistent excellence in our students' academic performance, always in the top 3% of Victorian schools for VCE results. We do not emphasise any area of study over another, believing that flexibility in individual programming and access are the keys in helping girls to realise their potential and achieve success.

The destinations of Korowa graduates are as varied and interesting as the girls themselves. They choose their own path and write their own success story.

Q: Korowa’s VCE results are consistently outstanding. Why is that?
A:

We believe Korowa’s outstanding VCE results can be attributed to a range of factors including:

  • encouraging each girl to be an individual, valuing what she brings to the School and supporting her development on an individual basis
  • a sequential curriculum which builds from the Junior School into the Middle School and then the Senior School which, in additional to promoting high levels of knowledge acquisition, aims to develop girls into active and interested thinkers delivered by outstanding teachers who truly care about each student
  • clear and consistent expectations about learning and work requirements across the School
  • encouraging all students to pursue activities outside the classroom so they have downtime from their academic studies and broaden their life experience

Our results are all the more impressive when you consider that Korowa is a non-selective school. That is, we do not have required academic standards for entry, nor do we ask girls to leave who are not performing at a high level.

Q: There are so many possibilities offered at Korowa. How does a student know what is best for them?
A: We work with each individual girl to establish an understanding of her passions and interests. We hold information nights for parents and a structured careers program for students. In addition, families are given a detailed curriculum guide to assist with their subject selection decision making for the following year.
Q: Does Korowa specialize in any particular academic area?
A: No, Korowa doesn’t focus on one particular academic area over another. This would counter our core philosophy that each girl’s interests and pursuits should be valued and supported. We find that girls excel across a wide range of subject areas each year.
Q: Where do Korowa students head to after graduation?
A: Most Korowa students study at university, sometimes after a gap year in which they might travel and work, both locally or overseas. They pursue a wide range of tertiary studies including law, medicine, commerce, fashion design, outdoor education and graphic art. Our Post School Destination page provides more information about this.
Q: Are Senior School students encouraged to participate in activities outside the classroom?
A: Absolutely. After all, we are preparing them for life, not for exams.

There is an expectation that students will undertake a regular homework program during the year. However, Korowa also strongly encourages all girls to pursue a range of interests and co-curricular activities.
Q: How do you endeavour to prepare girls for University life?
A: At Korowa we recognise that success after school usually depends on self motivation, good organizational skills and a strong work ethic. Therefore we endeavour to instil these attributes in all Korowa students from day one.

Our modern and light-filled VCE Centre is the home for VCE students. Housing their lockers, private study areas and a fully equipped kitchen and lounge area, girls become increasingly responsible for their own learning. Careful observation and support by teachers promote independent study habits and strong time management skills, thereby preparing Korowa students for university life.
Q: How does the Senior School operate?
A: The Senior School at Korowa Anglican Girls' School operates on a 10 day timetable. Each day commences with a class gathering and roll call with their Tutor at 8.25am which all girls attend. Classes conclude at 3.15pm.
