Korowa students selected for National Youth Science Forum

In a rare feat for a single school, three Korowa Anglican Girls' School students have been chosen to participate in the 2010 National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) - a gathering of the brightest students with the potential to become tomorrow's scientific leaders.

Year Eleven students Amanda Dao, Simone Gunsberger and Lisa Qu are three of 450 students from across Australia chosen from almost 2000 applicants to participate.

The Forum targets high achievers across the country to participate in a twelve-day residential program that showcases the growing variety of university science courses and careers.

Korowa's students excel at science, with almost half of the Year 12 students studying either chemistry, biology or physics. Chemistry Teacher, Dr Ian Johnson, attributes this to a unique school environment and middle school curriculum that excites students about the possibilities of science.

"The Middle School years in particular are a crucial turning point for students, influencing their subsequent VCE subject choices and career preferences. Peers also play an important role in these decisions and at Korowa it's considered cool to be interested in Science and to excel in all areas of school life - from the arts to science.

"It's not uncommon for most of our high achieving students to excel equally in Arts and Science subjects," he explained.

Bucking the declining science enrolment trend, 92% of NYSF students enrol in a science course at university and of those students, 85% continue to pursue a career in science or engineering based areas.

The Korowa students will have the opportunity to talk to eminent scientists and work in laboratories of some of the country's leading technological facilities including CSIRO's research division, the Snowy Mountains Hydro Electric Authority and the National Gallery's restoration laboratories.

Students also engage in a series of energetic debates questioning the legal, political and ethical implications of topical science issues such as climate change. The Forum also offers participants training in time management, interview skills and public speaking.

The 2010 Forum will commence in Canberra on Monday 4 January.
