Life through stencils and screens: Gallery Ranfurlie exhibition

17 August 2009

Dream Screen by Ralf Kempken

An exhibition of stencils and screens by contemporary Melbourne artist Ralf Kempken will be on show at Gallery Ranfurlie from Wednesday 26 August to Saturday 29 August 2009. Entitled ‘Looking In Looking Out', the exhibition will include a vast array of striking stencil and screen works, some of which explore recognisable CBD buildings including ICI House and 20 Collins Street.

Kempken works with multilayered stencils and screens using aerosol paint and acrylic brushwork to present a unique depiction of how people perceive their emotional and physical environment. In his screens, he cuts with absolute precision into the image to create incredible optical illusions.

"At one level, I am only documenting some of Melbourne's buildings and at another I am providing an emotional trigger for memories as experienced by the viewer in that place," Kempken explained.

Kempken, a Melbourne inner-city native for 25 years, is based at the Abbotsford Convent Gallery and has exhibited at a range of contemporary art galleries and stencil art festivals across Australia.
