Navy A109 helicopter visits Korowa Anglican Girls’ School

18 March 2008

In town for a demonstration during the Formula One Grand Prix, the helicopter made a flying visit to Korowa before heading back to base in NSW.

The visit was organised by Year 5 teacher Nina Harrison, as part of her "Fly, Fly Away" study unit. The girls are studying the principles of flight and exploring techniques and materials that can be used to create flying models. The final task is for the girls to build a "flying model and have a "fly-off" day.

After landing on the school oval the crew - Lieutenant Han Yu, Sub Lieutenant Sid Raper and Sub Lieutenant Andrew Clyne - shut down the engines and gave a 15 minute talk to the girls about helicopter flight. The crew showed staff and students over the aircraft and then let the girls loose for a 'play'.

Ms Harrison said today

"This is a very hands-on, science-based unit that involves lots of experiments. The visit by the Navy helicopter is an absolute highlight for the girls and has really made this unit come alive for them".
