Music

Music

Music is a most instinctive, immediate and expressive art. Therefore, at Korowa, we aim to stimulate, develop and maintain an interest in and a love of music through the classroom music program and through a multiplicity of co-curricular activities.

All Korowa students from those in the ELC to Year 12 have access to a wide range of musical experiences.

Korowa offers students the opportunity to learn an extensive range of different instruments in co-curricular music lessons.

The Korowa Music Department includes four full time teachers, and 23 part time instrumental staff. These specialists offer private tuition in all orchestral and concert band instruments, such as:

  • Acoustic Guitar
  • Bassoon
  • Cello
  • Clarinet & Bass Clarinet
  • Double Bass
  • Electric Bass
  • Electric Guitar
  • Euphonium
  • Flute & Piccolo
  • French Horn
  • Harp
  • Oboe
  • Percussion
  • Piano
  • Saxophone - alto, tenor & baritone
  • Trombone
  • Trumpet
  • Tuba
  • Violin
  • Viola
  • Voice

Students may also choose to be involved in many different ensembles and orchestras including:

Indeed, once students reach an appropriate level with their instrument, they are actively encouraged to participate in a group.

Eight choirs operate at Korowa.  From the Mini-Singers, a non-auditioned group open to all girls in Years 1 - 3 through to Korowa's renowned Koristers, an auditioned group of singers drawn from Years 9 - 12, all girls have the opportunity to participate in a singing group.  Some choirs are open to all interested girls, some require an audition.

Although the experience of singing in front of an audience will be new for some students, all girls are urged to take advantage of the opportunities offered.  For example, all Year 7 girls are required to participate in the first 4 weeks of rehearsals of the Cripps Choir (a non-auditioned choir for girls in Years 6 - 8).  If they choose not to pursue this opportunity after that time, they do so in an informed context.  (This philosophy underpins most activities at Korowa.  Girls are strongly urged to try new experiences and explore new challenges on a regular basis.)

Students of all levels of musical development have the opportunity to perform in front of a variety of audiences.  In addition to performances in School assemblies and in lunchtime and after school soirees, there are numerous formal School events in which virtually all students perform or have the opportunity to do so, including:

  • Annual Music Concert
  • Korowa Cathedral Service
  • Speech Night
  • Arts Festival
  • House Chorals

Korowa student regularly perform in special Korowa events, interschool musical functions, invitational functions, eisteddfods and events at community venues.
