Middle School
At Korowa we believe early adolescence is something to celebrate and a time to set good habits and positive attitudes. Led by Ms Annie Sterck, Head of Middle School, the Middle School offers a unique curriculum. In addition to traditional subject areas, students also participate in two Korowa-only subjects which aim to guide students to better appreciate and understand themselves as a learner as well as continuing the exploration of their place in the broader world.
Korowa offers a great variety of subject choice to students. In the Middle School, girls study Art and Design, Drama, English, Geography, History, Learning Technologies, LOTE including Chinese, French, German and Japanese, Mathematics, Science, Music, Outdoor Education, Personal Development, Health and Physical Education and Religious Education.
The Year 6 program is largely delivered by a single teacher with specialist staff supporting the delivery in certain subject areas. During Years 7 and 8, students follow a more traditional secondary school model but, at Korowa, we limit student exposure to a relatively small team of teachers who take time to get to know them and support the girls, who help them integrate their learning and who work in close cooperation with each other. In addition to personalizing the learning experience for each child, our approach ensures Middle School students develop strong and abiding relationships with their teachers thereby providing them with a solid sense of security and stability, critical during these formative years. With no boys around, girls take the lead role in all debates, dramas and discussions.
Our purpose-built Middle School - the Cripps Centre - for Years 6 to 8 has dynamic classroom spaces which allow teachers to literally step outside the box and use new and exciting ways to deliver lessons.
Year 6 is the entry year for our Notebook computer program, and it has become a major tool for the adventurous and exploratory learning occurring in these years.
Your daughter will develop confidence, maturity and appreciation of others and the environment through our outdoor education program. Memories and friendships are made and a sense of self is discovered. The advantage of a one-campus smaller school allows your daughter many opportunities to interact with students from other year levels. Korowa's House system means that girls across age groups learn to work together while competing in House Sports and performing arts competitions.
Homework is intrinsically linked to, and grows out of work done in the classroom. At Korowa, homework is used to complement the study of each subject, while reflective study aims to increase student understanding and knowledge by encouraging ongoing, independent learning. We expect Korowa students to undertake around 45 minutes of homework each day in Year 6 rising to 1 - 1½ hours in Year 8.
