K Ball Auction Catalogue

Lot 1

Lot 1 - Kite

Rachel Yong
Oil on canvas
1800x1250mm
Signed

Although the idea for this painting is simple, it has been quite difficult. I had to be aware of the direction of brushstrokes and the compatibility of the different shades of blue which make up the sky. Painting the clouds was also challenging. The highlights and shadows in the clouds added depth and looked particularly effective when I added highlights of pink, blue, green and yellow. The arrangement of the canvases is asymmetrical. The placement of colour and subject matter creates the balance in the composition. The painting is homage to Dave Mullers (b1964, San Francisco) painting The Northerly Set.

Lot 2 - Portrait of  Girl

Camiile Moir-Smith
Oil and mixed media on canvas
1210x910mm
Signed and framed

My aim was to mix the precision and logic of science (human anatomy) and the
freedom and expression of art together in my work. I was inspired by the human body in realistic images, life drawing, photographs and everyday human emotion. In my portraits I wanted to capture the sitters emotion and my emotion also.

For the oil paintings I finished with a semi abstract appearance which is in contrast to the pencil drawings but holds more emotion and expression. My oil painting explores the expression and freedom of art.

Lot 3 - Man and Women

Amanda Kellargis
Graphite drawing
500x700mm
Signed and framed

My work aims to explore the various modes of entrapment experienced by the individual. The overall mood is one of ambiguity, inscrutability, fragility and
fragmentation. I think about the forces that entrap the individual in terms of two main factors-internal and environmental. The internal is represented in terms of gender - that is, the embodied experience of being male or female, sexuality and psychology.
The environmental is represented through the physical reality that the individual experiences (ie the landscape, both natural and man-made) and the abstract constructs of society (ie its expectations, stereotypes, meanings and messages).

I first experimented with gender in terms of the figure ie animal and human, adult and child. I used the figures of animals as vehicles for expressing gender dynamics; the adult human female figure as a way of expressing the embodied female experience; the images of babies/children to express the more universal concerns of birth/death/culture. In this way I identify gender dynamics, female stereotypes/roles, and the certainties of birth/death/culture as constraints on the individual.

Lot 4 - Marilyn

Maddey Aubrey
Oil on Canvas
760x505mm
Signed and framed

I chose to work from this photograph of Marilyn Monroe because I liked the pose and the image. The pose highlights all the Marilyn trade marks eg the blonde wavy hair, pouting lips, cleavage and beauty spots. I chose this particular image because it is so easily identifiable as Marilyn.

Lot 5 - Audrey

Maddey Aubrey
Oil on Canvas
760x505mm
Signed and framed

I selected this image of Audrey Hepburn because it is the classic Breakfast at Tiffanys photo. Not only does the image remind you of the style and grace of Audrey Hepburn but it also reminds you of the world famous movie. It is also easily identifiable as an iconic image of the 20th century.

Lot 6 - Underwater Figure

Maya Abeysekera
Pastel on paper
570x770mm
Signed and framed

My imagery is based around the theme of water and also inspired by the ancient myth of the mermaid. I became fascinated by the aesthetics of water and hoped to depict it in my own work. I was inspired by the sculptures of a German sculptor Christel, who made white ceramic figures of the horoscope symbols.I was also inspired by David Hockneys pool series and the effects he was able to create. My other major source of inspiration came from the Australian photographer, Simon O Dwyer and his series titled Perfumed Waters.

I began exploring these images using dry pastel and oil paints. I attempted to portray the fall of light through water and also the bubbles. I think the shimmer of light through water creates a luminosity which is captured using line and colour.
