Information Resources
In educating students for a rapidly changing world, Korowa believes it is important for them to learn how to use available learning technologies to enhance their educational outcomes. The Korowa Junior and Senior School libraries actively promote the use of electronic methods of information gathering and its analysis in their Information Literacy Teaching programs.
The Libraries' collections comprise:
- curriculum support materials
- text books
- professional development resources for teachers
- special collections such as Parents' resources, and
- recreational and leisure resources.
The Libraries subscribe to numerous newspapers and to educational on-line databases including EBSCOs, ANZRC, Macquarie Net, Echo as well as various on-line encyclopaedias and a number of diverse and topical periodicals. All students have access to excellent recording and editing facilities to encourage project and study based multimedia productions.
Korowa's Junior and Senior School Information resources are administered by school information specialists - teacher librarians, library assistants and an audiovisual co-ordinator.
In addition to library research relating to class projects, Korowa Libraries augment students' home reading experiences by selecting high quality titles which appeal to a wide range of interests, abilities and purposes. The Libraries maintain vibrant intranet pages with thematic and year level lists, reviews and new title alerts. Information Literacy classes are taught and students are assisted with book selection. Staff are aware of students' reading interests and abilities. Engaging displays are also maintained.
The libraries use the MetaMarc Library Management System. MetaMarc is integrated with the School's network (Koronet), desktop, notebook and server infrastructure to become the hub of the information network. Koronet is the gateway to all resources, services and procedures of the Libraries. Included are assignment and subject resource pathways, graded and thematic reading lists, new resources and reviews of novels, search strategies and web searching hints, bibliographic and referencing procedures as well as information literacy programs. Student can access Koronet usring virtual private network (VPN) dial-up access from home.
The Library catalogue can be browsed in a similar fashion to the Internet with hyperlinks to web sites. It searches every word in the record it is a key word search retrieving information by authors, subjects and various other keywords.
