School History
The Beginnings
The School began in 1890, first in two houses in Valetta Street, Malvern and then in an old house in Pine Grove and from 1900, in a two storey house in Wattletree Road. In 1906, Korowa registered as School No.5. In 1914 Korowa moved to the present site, the former property of the Hon. William Knox, MHR, known as Ranfurlie. From 1910 to 1918 it was a Presbyterian school for girls but in 1919 was incorporated by the Diocesan authorities as a Church of England Grammar School.
Since 1914 many additions to both the land and the buildings have been made. The oldest building is the Roberts Wing, built in 1926 and extended in 1935. This was named after the Reverend A.A. Roberts who was the school chaplain from 1956 to 1965. This building has recently been renovated to include a wireless computer lab facility, new classrooms and offices for staff.
When the Diocese of Melbourne adopted the title 'Anglican' instead of Church of England in 1982, it was agreed that the Church connection should be retained in the name and has since been known as Korowa Anglican Girls' School.
For the Middle Years
In 2002, Korowa opened The Cripps Centre, one of the most technologically advanced educational facilities in Australia. The building is designed for the Middle years 6, 7 and 8 and is designed for integrative learning across all areas of the Korowa curriculum.
Enjoying State of the Art Facilities
In 2006, Korowa's new Senior School Library and Information Resources Centre had its grand opening. The Centre includes computer facilities, audiovisual hardware and assistance, quiet study areas, seminar rooms and ‘reading for pleasure' lounge areas. The Centre is used by all students from Year 6 upwards and allows students easy access to curriculum resources and staff assistance in a pleasant, spacious environment.
The new VCE Student Centre, encompassing quiet study areas, advanced computing facilities and small group discussion rooms, means Korowa VCE students are able to use their time most effectively at School. This new light-filled, state-of-the-art Centre is the perfect environment for preparing for assessment tasks, presentations and examinations. It's not all hard work - Year 11 and 12 girls also need a space to relax and have a break, and the Café provides just this. VCE girls now have an area to have lunch and hold informal year level gatherings and a secure place to store their books and belongings. The new VCE Centre is a comfortable ‘home away from home' for our Senior students.
The School also recently opened a new Theatre, accessible to all students across the school. It accommodates an entire year level to hear a guest speaker, to view a multimedia presentation or to enjoy a small group performance. The Theatre will also be used for parents' seminars and community functions. The new Careers Library is a vital resource for Year 10 to 12 students. In its new location it is more convenient for students and provides an inviting environment for their research. The Careers Counsellor and the Director of Studies and Learning are located nearby. Students are able to access advice and support in a relaxed and peaceful setting adjacent to the VCE areas.
