ELC

Early Learning Centre

At Korowa, we believe in getting it right from the start.  Korowa's Early Learning Centre (ELC) provides a secure, happy and warm environment where children begin their formal education in an inspiring and harmonious setting.

We affirm a child's sense of wonder, discovery and natural curiosity and provide an environment which allows for rich play experiences which stimulate each childs development.

The learning programs are based on two sound educational philosophies - the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Program (PYP) and Reggio Emilia.  Curriculum differentiation is an important component of program development.

The intention is to support children's efforts to construct meaning from the world around them by drawing on their prior knowledge, providing inspiration through new experiences and providing time and opportunity for reflection and consolidation.  The environment is an important part of the learning experience.  We take care to set up interesting activities, using lots of natural materials.

Each year level generally undertakes four units of work each year, one per term. The specific content of the learning units varies each year in line with the developmental needs and interests of the children.

The ELC program is supplemented with opportunities for further creative and cultural experiences in the specialist areas of Music, Art and Library. Along with this, the young child's gross motor needs are catered for with a Perceptual Motor/Physical Education Program. The student use of computers and other technologies forms an integral part of the ELC curriculum.

Each child's learning journey is documented through observations, discussions, creative expression and photos.  These form part of their portfolio which becomes a celebration of their individual learning journey.

The Early Learning Centre is part of the Junior School, led by the Head of the Junior School, Mr Craig Duncan.

In Beginners (3 year old kindergarten) children can attend a full-time or part-time program of 2, 3, 4 or 5 permanently scheduled days.  The days must be consecutive and include either a Monday or a Friday.

In Reception (4 year old kindergarten) children attend for either 4 or 5 days. The Reception children wear the School uniform and attend School functions and celebrations.

Recently refurbished, the ELC operates from 8.35am to 3.00pm each day.  Children may bring their lunch to School each day or order nutritious food from our tuckshop.

All Early Learning Centre students and their families have access to Korowa's various support facilities including before and after school care and holiday programs, as well as our School Counsellor, Health Centre and School Chaplain.

Korowa's Centre for Individual Enrichment provides specialized programs of support for highly able and talented students as well as those experiencing learning difficulties.
