Debating

Debating

Korowa is an active participant of the Debating Association of Victoria's (DAV) Schools Competition in which approximately 200 schools and 1,125 teams compete. It is the largest competition of its kind in the southern hemisphere.

School teams range in age and experience from Year 8 to Year 12, new members being added through auditions in Term One. There are five rounds of debates between March and August, with finalists in each region proceeding to further competitions. Trials for the Victorian State Teams are held in March for all senior debaters who wish to try out.

The DAV have introduced a four week training session and debating competition for Year 7 and 8 only in Term 3, to encourage students to enter the main Schools Competition with confidence.

House debates are held in Term 3 and are open to girls from Year 10 to 12. Senior debaters organise Staff-Student debates and sometimes invite current personalities to debate our A Grade team.

Debating develops confidence in public speaking, invaluable for interviews later in life; the ability to analyse and research topics, an excellent aid to essay writing; and the ability to "think on one's feet." It is also great fun, and enables our students to meet many other students from regional schools.
