School Counsellor

As part of a team, the School Counsellor assists students, families and School personnel to resolve or cope with problems which adversely affect the ability of students to make optimal use of their school experiences and to gain a sense of achievement and personal well being from school. The Counsellor may work with individuals, groups of students, parents, whole families and Staff.

As well as offering an intervention service, Korowa's School Counsellor, Mrs Barbara Stowe, has a preventative role. This is achieved through delivering social skills programs and participating in class meetings in Junior School, in helping to plan and teach in the Personal Development program in the Middle and Senior Schools and through organising Parent Education evenings on a wide range of topics.

Where intervention is appropriate, the School Counsellor offers a casework service offering short-term problem-solving help and/or referral to other professionals, support to parents and consultation and support to staff. 

Difficulties preventing students from maximising their educational opportunity are varied. There may be relationship difficulties, family problems or breakdown, eating disorders, alcohol and drug abuse, psychiatric illness, personality disorders, grief and loss issues amongst others.  The aim of intervention is to use the identified crisis in order to empower students, to strengthen relationships, to develop problem-solving skills and to enhance self-esteem and other life skills.

The School Counsellor provides a confidential service except in situations of extreme risk.
