Careers Counseling

Careers Counselling

There are so many choices facing students today. The world of work is changing rapidly as is tertiary education. The aim of our Careers program is to prepare Korowa students for an evolving work environment, assisting them to make choices, which are consistent with their skills, interests, abilities and personal values.

Comprising both formal classes and individual counseling, our Careers program leads to excellent outcomes.  Every 2007 VCE student was presented with a first round University offer.  Our University entry levels were 2nd highest in the State in 2006.

People are moving more frequently between jobs and indeed careers, sometimes by choice often by necessity. There is a requirement for flexibility and adaptability. Employees need to have excellent job seeking skills and to be able to reinvent themselves in order to remain competitive. It is predicted that by the year 2020, 50% of the jobs will be ones that do not exist now. This may or may not be true. What we do know is that individuals who are resilient and know how to plan their careers and to take control of their future will be able to navigate their own career path.  This is our intention for Korowa graduates.

The Careers Education program at Korowa builds on the skills - including communication, problem solving, research and computer literacy - developed from the earliest years.  The focus is very much on giving students tools to create their own future.  An extensive careers library is available for student use and provides students with up to date information about courses and occupations.

Students in Years 9 - 12 have access to individual careers counselling and participate in careers education, which is included in the personal development program. The careers program is sequential, integrated and supports students decision making as they plan their VCE.  In Year 10 the emphasis is very much on self-exploration; skills, interests, aptitude and values.

Work experience allows students to broaden their knowledge further and to apply job seeking skills. During Years 11 & 12 students continue to participate in career education workshops and have the opportunity to hear from a variety of guest speakers.  Career goals gradually become clearer and allow students to make the connection between themselves and the opportunities beyond Korowa.

The Korowa Careers Program is led by Liz Rasztotsky, Head of Careers.
