Learning

Our Approach

Korowa approaches the learning needs of all students from the Early Learning Centre through to VCE with commitment, compassion and enthusiasm.  We are dedicated to encouraging all students to reach their full potential, wherever that may lie.

Our curriculum is a carefully constructed path which leads girls to academic success now and into the future.  It also facilitates the development of that confident inner person who has the strength of character and resolve to succeed in endeavours throughout their lifetime.

Classroom activities are complemented by a wide range of co-curricular programs, which we encourage all girls to pursue.

The concept of curriculum differentiation underpins the teaching at all levels at Korowa.  The curriculum showcase provides some examples of differentiation in action.

In the Early Learning Centre, the educational programs evolve each year in line with the developmental needs and interests of the children.  Based on sound educational philosophies, the curriculum inspires young learners to grow in confidence and prepares them for the school years ahead.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Program (PYP) provides the foundation for our curriculum during Junior School Prep - Year 5.  This trans-disciplinary program is designed to foster the development of the whole child, not just in the classroom but also through other means of learning by offering a framework that meets children's diverse needs: academic, social, physical, emotional and cultural.

Our Middle School curriculum is unique.  Based on the concept of ‘making sense' in four key areas - self, thinking, learning and the world, the Middle School experience includes an explicit focus on the development of individual girls both as learners but also as emerging adults who are confident and capable outside of the school setting. Students are challenged to reflect on their own learning styles and processes and to be active participants in their own learning.

The senior years at Korowa are a time of great opportunity and achievement.  There is consolidation of earlier work undertaken by students to gain a deep understanding of themselves as learners.  Cultural exchanges, leadership positions and teamwork opportunities are abundant.  The Senior School curriculum offers a broad range of subjects including most VCE subjects.

The benefits of a girls-only classroom from Prep to Year 12 are evident at Korowa.  Independent research consistently demonstrates that girls simply learn better in a single gender environment.  Korowa students have strong role models, an abundance of leadership opportunities and are less likely to limit themselves by conforming to gender stereotypes. When combined with our small class sizes, the capacity for girls to flourish grows.
